Legislation that governs the use of animals for research, teaching or product testing in NSW operates within a system of self-regulation.

That is, the legislation sets out the broad principles and outcomes that it seeks to achieve but allows flexibility in the application of these principles so that the special and specific circumstances of individual cases can be taken into account.

Our goals are to ensure that the use of animals is necessary (replacement), that the minimum number are used to achieve the scientific goals (reduction) with minimum impact on the welfare of those animals (refinement).

In this section you will find information from a wide range of resources which will assist and inform the decisions as to whether animals are used and if so how.
