FELASA Working Group Report - Standardisation of Enrichment

This comprehensive report prepared by a FELASA working group chaired by Professor Vera Baumans, is an important and timely contribution to the question of Environmental Enrichment (EE).The report covers the principles of EE, its evaluation, the debate as to effects on variability and experimental bias, examples of species-related EE and how to approach implementing EE programs.

The Report concludes the EE is one of the most complex challenges for laboratory animal science and welfare and that scientific evaluation is the key to ensure EE benefits animal welfare. The Report notes that the issues in relation to EE and scientific outcomes are also complex and predict there will be no single answer in the foreseeable future.

The Report recommends a systematic approach to the design and evaluation of EE programs and the development of a database of current EE programs. Copies of this Report can be down loaded from the Laboratory Animals Ltd (LAL) website.
