Information for Accredited Establishments

Institutions are accredited to use animals in research

Institutions are accredited to use animals in research, teaching or product testing.  In addition to the legislative requirements, the Code of Practice sets out the responsibilities of Institutions, including the need to establish an Animal Ethics Committee, to have procedures in place to ensure due process, to ensure facilities are at an acceptable standard and that their staff are aware of their legal responsibilities.

There also are areas where the scope of responsibilities under the Animal Research Act may be open to interpretation, for example, differentiation between acts of veterinary science and research.

As issues arise, guidelines are developed to assist institutions in these matters.
