This website has been developed by the Animal Research Review Panel and NSW Department of Primary Industries Animal Welfare Branch. Its aim is to assist researchers, teachers and members of Animal Ethics Committees to access information about the operation of the Animal Research Act 1985, Animal Research Regulation 2005 and The Code of Practice in New South Wales. In addition to specific information about this legislation, including relevant policies and guidelines, this site provides general information about legislation in other states and countries and links to many sites from which useful, general information promoting the humane care and use of animals for scientific purposes can be sourced.
By following the links you can find information about accreditation and licensing, Animal Ethics Committees, the three R’s (replacement, reduction and refinement) education and training as well as guidelines on a range of issues including animal care, animal supply, research procedures such as blood collection and wildlife research.
The Animal Research Act covers the use of animals for a range of purposes including their use in research, teaching, product testing, field trials, diagnosis of disease, production of biological products and environmental studies. ‘Animals’ include all live non-human vertebrates, such as fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals which may be purpose-bred, farm livestock or wildlife.
The information on this site will be regularly reviewed to ensure that it is accurate and current and links are active. The ’What’s New’ link will highlight new major publications or initiatives. Advice as to possible sources of information which can be added to this site would be appreciated and we welcome any feedback which will help us improve this site to better meet your needs.
